ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Two St. Louis police officers were kept overnight at a hospital being treated for injuries sustained in a shooting Wednesday in a north city neighborhood.
The shooting took place around 10:50 p.m. in the 900 block of Elias Avenue. The home is located in the city's Baden Neighborhood.
A 31-year-old female officer, who has been with the department for six years, was shot in the foot. She was treated and released. A 26-year-old male officer was shot in the thigh. He has been with the department for two years.
The male officer was admitted to the hospital overnight and is in stable condition. Police Chief Sam Dotson said both officers are in good spirits. He said hopefully they'll be able to return to work soon.
Chief Dotson says the officers were able to return fire at the man who shot them. The 44-year-old suspect was shot several times by the officers. Police say he is currently in critical but stable condition.
Chief Dotson says the officers were on patrol together, when they received a call for a security alarm going off at a residence on Elias Avenue. As the officers were walking towards the back of the home, the 44-year-old resident approached them, and without any conversation or warning, started shooting at the officers. Chief Dotson described the man's actions as an assault on his officers and says it was an unprovoked attack.
The suspect's name is not being released at this time. Chief Dotson says the man is familiar to officers and has had encounters with police before. The Chief did not elaborate on those comments. He says after the shooting, police searched the man's home and found narcotics packaged for sale.
