ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Light, fluffy snow often turns into a cold, hard freeze the day after. It's not always easy to get off your windshield. Or unlock your frozen door locks.
Here are some ways to thaw your car before you have to drive to work or school.
Warm up your key for a few minutes with a lighter before you put it in the door locks. A warm key will cut through an icy buildup and warm the locking mechanism enough to release them.
If your deicer is in your locked car, try hand sanitizer. Squirt some on the windshield, rub it in and watch it break up. Sanitizer works because it has alcohol in it, typically found in deicers.
A hairdryer plugged into an extension cord could also help you thaw out your door locks or key locks too. Shoot the hot air inside the keyhole for a few minutes.
Of course, going that route opens the possibility of electrocution or even fire, should the cords rest in the snow and become wet.
