ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - An East St. Louis woman accused of animal abuse for her involvement in the injuring of a now, well known puppy, has waived her right to have a jury hear the case, and will allow a judge to decide her guilt or innocence.

The bench trial for 41-year-old Benetta Johnson started Tuesday in St. Louis Circuit Court.

Johnson is facing the misdemeanor charge after attempting to return a 6-month-old puppy, later named Trooper, to her ex-husband who had given the dog to Johnsons 5-year-old daughter.

Investigators say Trooper was tied to the bumper of the ex-spouse's pick-up truck last November 20.  Victor Washington then drove off in the vehicle, not knowing the puppy was tied to the bumper.

The puppy was dragged along Interstate 55 until a passerby noticed the dog and motioned for the man to stop.
