ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KSDK) - Service has been restored to several St. Clair County, Illinois towns that experienced a 911 outage earlier today.

Herb Simmons, who oversees the 911 system for Cencom in St. Clair County, says a construction crew severed a fiber optic line somewhere near Marissa, Illinois, which knocked out the 911 system to parts of the county, including Smithton, Freeburg, and New Athens.

Crews were able to find the location of the break and repair the fiber optic line.

Residents were able to call their local police department or non-emergency numbers for assistance during the outage.

Scott Weymouth, a spokesperson for the St. Clair county Sheriff's Department is unaware of any widespread problems resulting from this incident.
