CARLINVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - A student at Blackburn College in Macoupin County found dead in his dorm room last month was determined to have overdosed on opium, the Carlinville Police Department said Monday.
According to Carlinville Police Chief David Haley, officers and EMS personnel were called to Blackburn College on January 19 shortly after 2:45 p.m. and discovered the body of Joshua Ramza on his dorm bed.
Macoupin County Coroner Brad Targhetta determined Ramza died of opium intoxication and ruled his death a homicide. Chief Haley said it cannot be assumed that another person was responsible for Ramza's death, despite the coroner's ruling.
Targhetta told NewsChannel 5 that Ramza appeared to have been supplied with heroin, which he took willingly, hence the homicide ruling.
The investigation remains ongoing.
