ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A drunk intruder is in the hospital after being shot by a homeowner, because he thought it was his own home.

Police say a "heavily intoxicated" man was tampering with a door in the 4000 block of Humphrey in a Tower Grove neighborhood around 12:30a.m. Wednesday.  During the attempt to get in, police say the homeowner shot the intruder in the calf.

Police believe 32-year-old Jared Harris thought he was trying to get into his own house.

Harris stumbled down the street, leaving a trail of blood for emergency crews and police. The 47-year-old black homeowner used a 9mm handgun and was not arrested.

Police say Harris is in stable condition.

On Wednesday afternoon the Circuit Attorney's Office charged Harris with first-degree trespassing.
