ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A 26-year-old St. Louis police officer has been suspended from his job after the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office filed charges against him.
St. Louis police said Matthew Schanz was charged with two counts of domestic assault and one count of resisting/interfering with arrest because of an incident when he was off-duty on March 10.
According to the probable cause statement, the suspect choked the victim and smashed the victim's head against the wall. The victim called police.
Officer Schanz was allegedly left the scene as uniformed officers arrived and tried to stop him.
Officer Schanz was relieved of his patrol responsibilities and placed on administrative duty while the department conducted an internal and criminal investigation.
He was since been suspended from his position.
Officer Schanz was assigned to the Sixth District and the Police Academy.
