EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KSDK) - Repeal the tax. That's the message some Metro East churches sent during a protest Thursday.

The protest is a response to a new fee targeting congregations and non-profits.

The pastors say the city is billing churches $100 per year. The mayor says the money will go to inspecting at least 100 churches around East St. Louis and says the fee started in January.

Pastor Jerome Rogers who is representing most of the churches says he's asked for inspection reports, and so far the city keeps giving him the run around.

He wants the city council to get the fee off the book.

The mayor says it's possible to rescind the law, but he won't recommend it.
