St. Louis (KSDK)-On Sunday, a small army of volunteers helped clean up and improve a St. Louis high school.

And they were lead by a U.S. President.

President Bill Clinton spent the weekend in St. Louis with college students from around the country at the Clinton Global Initiative University at Washington University.

CGI U brings college students together to try and find solutions to global problems.

About 300 of the students extended their weekend in St. Louis to volunteer at Gateway STEM high school.

They did some beautification work around the school, built planters for the horticulture classes and painted inside the building. Along with some solar panels installed by a local company, Gateway's principal estimates close to a quarter million dollars in materials and time were donated to the school.

The morning began with both the President and his daughter, Chelsea Clinton, speaking to volunteers and Gateway students about the importance of STEM education.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

The President told the students the country desperately needs more young people in these fields.
