ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The jury has been seated for the trial of a north St. Louis man accused in the April 2011 death of a Vietnamese immigrant who died after being injured in an unprovoked attack authorities call the "knock out game."

The State will continue presenting evidence against the defendant Wednesday.

Twenty-year-old Elex Murphy is charged with first-degree murder, assault, and armed criminal action for the attack that left 72-year-old Hoang Nguyen dead, and the injuring of Nguyen's 59-year-old wife Yen.

The state launched its opening statement shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say the couple was attacked as they walked home in the 3800 block of South Spring after shopping at a nearby grocery market.

Investigators say the victims were punched and kicked repeatedly by a group of young adults who then ran from the scene when a car approached.

Authorities say Hoang Nguyen fell to the ground after being struck and suffered a severe head injury.

Days later, Murphy was arrested and charged in the crime. Police say several other participants in the attack were sought for their roles, but no other charges were disclosed in the case.
