Regions Bank cyber attack

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - NewsChannel 5 received a tip Thursday that Regions Bank had been hit by a cyber attack. 

The bank confirmed this tip through their Twitter account, tweeting, "We are currently under cyber attack and our website and Online Banking are experiencing issues. We apologize for any inconvenience."

They went on to say, "While we work on a resolution, please DM us or call 1-800-REGIONS for assistance. Thank you for your patience."

Several times a day. That's how often Jennifer Whitter uses online banking at Regions Bank. Thursday she was surprised she couldn't get online.

"I was using my iPhone and was trying to deposit a couple of checks and it wouldn't let me log on which is pretty unusual. Turned my phone on and off, and that didn't work so I went to the internet and tried to log in and that wouldn't work either," said Whitter.

Regions Bank used social media to alert customers about a cyber attack Thursday afternoon. Online and mobile banking were not accessible, leaving customers like Whitter unable to access their account.

Bank cyber attacks continue to be a disturbing trend. In recent weeks, a number of major U.S. Banks reported cyber attacks, including Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America, Citi, and now Regions.

"It's a little unsettling," said Whitter. "It's nice to know at this point in time they're saying no bank account numbers were hacked or anything like that but it also makes you question what really happened or maybe there's more than what they're telling you at this point."

A group of hackers has claimed responsibility for multiple bank cyberattacks. The group has vowed the attacks will continue until trailers for an anti-Muslim film are taken down from YouTube.

Evelyn Mitchell, a Corporate Communications spokesperson released the following statement:
"Regions is aware of a potential Internet service disruption that may temporarily impact our customers' ability to access our website or use our online banking service. We are taking every measure to protect both Regions and our customers.
• We apologize to customers who may experience limited access to regions.com and online banking, and will work quickly to resolve any issue.
• Customers experiencing difficulty can access account information and make transactions via ATM or by visiting a branch office.
• No customer information can be accessed or compromised."
