Clarksville, MO (KSDK) - Tensions and water continue to rise in towns all along the Mississippi River. Especially in Clarksville, Missouri where a massive sandbag operation is underway. People there are trying to keep the rising river from flooding their historic town.

"Clarksville has to be proof that volunteerism is not dead, it is alive and well," says Mayor Jo Anne Smiley of Clarksville.

The mighty Mississippi is here, but it's about to get worse. Residents and volunteers are working fast to save the historical downtown.

"We've had a lot of help and that helps out, but otherwise its been going pretty good," says resident Roger Dowell. "My wife gets mad because really I've been doing a lot up there, she gets aggravated because she wants to make sure that we are get our stuff too."

The main volunteer effort is centered around the downtown area, but the river has already made it's way to portions of Highway 79 north and south of town.

Dowell says believe it or not the rising river still isn't bad. Yes, the Mississippi has made its way to his front porch and beyond, but it 's been worse. That's the sentiment shared with neighbor Lionel Warren.

"I've been through quite a few floods," says Warren who knows that no matter how high the water gets, he's going to stay dry.

"I have never had water in my house since I bought this place," says Warren.

Across the street is a different story. 83 year old Virginia Osborne has had help the past 24 hours.

"There were women from the women's prison in Vandalia , they came over and they got it all done," says Osborne who knows that a wall of sandbags is necessary to keep her house dry. "It's a hard thing to do, to take the floods."

Volunteers are still needed in the town. Remember highway 79 is shut down. From St. Louis take Highway 61 to Highway WW and go east, take that to Highway W.
