St. Louis (KSDK)--It's a girl for Ellie, the St Louis Zoo's Asian elephant.
Ellie delivered the 251 lb. calf around 11:00 p.m. Friday, after a 23 month pregnancy. An Asian elephant's gestation period can range between 21 and 23 months.
The zoo says both Ellie and her baby are doing well.
Ellie is 42 years old. This is her third baby and the fourth for the baby's father Raja, 20. Raja is the first elephant ever born at the Saint Louis Zoo. He has three other daughters; Maliha, born on August 2, 2006, Jade, born February 25, 2007 and Kenzi, born on June 24, 2011.
The newest baby has not been named. The zoo is expected to announce a naming contest on its website and Facebook page in the coming days.
