ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - You've heard the phrase "it's all in a name" and this weekend at the Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel that name is Shirley because this is the site of the Shirley Club USA Convention.
"One thing we know in our group you don't have to remember anyone's name," Shirley Rose pointed out.
It's a club where the only thing members have in common is their name, something they argue actually makes meetings more interesting.
"If you go to a sewing club you're all sewing or play bridge that's all you do, but we have such diverse lot of ladies that come out it's brilliant," explained Shirley Watkiss.
They come from different countries and different walks of life. There are Australian Shirleys.
"I didn't see you come in, hi," one Shirley said to another.
There's one New Zealand Shirley and one Canadian Shirley.
It's a club that started in 1996 in Australia when Shirley Brown put an ad in her local newspaper in search of other Shirleys, 62 showed up. Then a few years ago, Shirley Rose, a Missouri Shirley discovered the club and started the USA chapter.
"I only knew one Shirley and I said to her if I start a club will you be my number two and she said sure," Shirley Rose said.
Now there are more than 250 members singing the same tune.
Last names are neither here nor there, this weekend is simply about having fun, something these women say you can count on if you're with someone named Shirley.
The Shirley Club USA is accepting new members, and to learn more, visit their website.
