PASADENA, Md. (WBAL) - The loss of a young life took an unusual turn when the Pasadena, Maryland family of a hit-and-run victim realized their gift of organ donation touched someone they knew.
When 15-year-old Skylar Marion was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in mid-April, no one knew that part of him would live on in another 15-year-old, let alone a childhood friend who needed a heart.
"He lives on within somebody else, but that somebody else I didn't even know I already knew. They said he'd been at my house before," said Skylar's dad, Michael Marion.
Skylar and his friend, Kyle Wilkerson, rode bicycles together as children growing up in Pasadena. Kyle needed a new heart and received one from Skylar, making their bond now deeper than friendship.
"It's unheard of to know who the donor is as fast as we knew. It's very bittersweet," said Kyle's mother, Denise Wilkerson.
