ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - NewsChannel 5 has confirmed an American detained in Russia went to school in the St. Louis area.

Ryan Fogle, a 2002 graduate of Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School, was arrested in Moscow Monday by Russian security officials.

Fogle, third secretary at the U.S. Embassy political section in Moscow, is accused of spying for the CIA and trying to recruit a Russian officer to work for the United States.

The FSB, Russia's security agency, says Fogle was detained while wearing a wig and carrying spy gear and a large sum of cash. They also say he was carrying a letter offering up to $1 million for a potential recruit.  He was ordered by the FSB to leave the country immediately.

RT.com posted a translation of the alleged letter. It says in part, "This is a down-payment from someone who is very impressed with your professionalism and who would greatly appreciate your cooperation in the future." It goes on to offer $100,000 "to discuss your experience, expertise and cooperation."

USA TODAY reports the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and the CIA in Washington declined comment on the situation.

TomoNewsUS creating a partially-animated video showing what is said to have happened during Fogle's detainment. You can watch that video below this story.
