ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A young child is safe, after a car thief stole a sport utility vehicle with the boy inside. The vehicle was found abandoned in north St. Louis.

The investigation started after the SUV was taken in the midtown area last night outside a credit union ATM where a man was making a transaction and left the sleeping child inside his car with the engine running.

While at the ATM the man turned towards his vehicle and saw a man getting inside and driving away, with the child still inside.

Just minutes later, a concerned neighbor noticed a vehicle in the alley behind the 2800 block of Montgomery and a man running from the SUV.

Police were called and arrived in the alley and found the unharmed child still sleeping in the back of the SUV.

The child was released to his father. Police say no charges are expected against the Dad.  The search for the car thief continues this morning.
