ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - Nothing was more heartbreaking to watch than the video of two elementary schools destroyed in that tornado.
We watched as crews dug through the rubble looking for children who took shelter in that school.
Educators in St. Louis say it's all about being prepared. That's why there are tornado drills. Teachers and principals are the first line of defense in a school.
Tina Garcia is a fifth grade teacher at Glenridge Elementary School in Clayton. Garcia and other teachers put together emergency kits for students. The kits contain flash lights and safety plans and sometimes books and toys to keep kids calm.
Clayton educators also carry with them an emergency list of contacts such as parents or grandparents.
There are similar emergency plans in other districts including Mehlville, St. Louis city and Parkway.
