BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - The Belleville Police Department is investigating reports of "unauthorized video recording" involving members of a boys' sports team at Althoff Catholic High School.

According to Belleville Police Chief William Clay, the school staff became aware of initial allegations around May 1. The suspects are believed to have recorded several female students.

School staff conducted an internal investigation and attempted to interview most of the students suspected of participating in the video recording or those who may have had knowledge of the incidents. In some instances, parents of those male students were contacted.

Chief Clay said the school contacted the police department on May 3, and launched its investigation on May 6.

Police have reached out to the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office to possibly seize or secure any cell phones or other electronic devices that may have been used in the recordings, or may contain other digital evidence tied to the crime.

The investigation remains ongoing.
