SEFFNER, Fla. (BAY NEWS 9/CNN) - Two homes on either side of a sinkhole blamed in a Florida man's death were demolished.
A private demolition company started tearing down the houses in Seffner Wednesday morning. Tthe homes were next to a sinkhole that opened in February, killing a man.
Hillsborough County officials say the homes were officially condemned last month after it was determined the cost to make repairs to the properties would exceed 50 percent of their value.
The demolition company used a long reach excavator and a backhoe excavator to tear down the homes.
"They're not going right up to the property. They're keeping a safe a distance as they can to get the demolition work done," said Willie Puz, Hillsborough County spokesperson.
The rest of the cleanup from the demolition could take another day or two. Fences will be put up where the three houses once stood.
