School bus accident closes southbound I-55
ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The southbound lanes of Interstate 55 were shut down Friday morning following an accident involving a school bus.
The accident happened prior to 8:50 a.m. on I-55 near the 7th Street exit.
The school bus was lying on its side. Children were in the bus at the time of the accident.
A second vehicle, a four-door car, was overturned further north.
Authorities said the bus appeared to have been rearended.
Six people were injured in the accident: 3 children and 2 adults on the school bus, and 1 adult in the other vehicle. Their injuries were said to be non-life threatening.
The three children were taken to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, the adults taken to St. Louis University Hospital.
The St. Louis Public School District transportation director said the three chldren have bumps and scrapes and were x-rayed as a precaution. Two of the children were treated and released. The third child will remain overnight for observation with minor injuries.
Friday was the last day of school for the children, who attend the preschool programs at Dewey and Wilkinson in the district.
The interstate reopened around 10 a.m.
