SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Heavy rains and high winds swept across central Illinois, causing flash flooding in Springfield and downing power lines and damaging buildings in Gillespie.

A dispatcher at the Gillespie Police Department told the Associated Press late Friday officers were too busy to report on the effect of high winds in the town of about 3,400 in Macoupin County.

The dispatcher, who refused to identify herself, said high winds knocked down trees and power lines and caused damage to several buildings. She refused to confirm reports of damage to the local high school, but said there were no initial reports of injuries.

NewsChannel 5 received several reports from viewers that there was damage to the school, including to the gym. Photos posted by the Coal Country Times on Facebook show damage to the school.

In Springfield, Fire Chief Ken Fustin said heavy rains flooded streets and viaducts in the city. He said there were no early reports of injuries.
