Lake St. Louis (KSDK) - A Lake St. Louis family narrowly escapes disaster after lightning strikes their home, igniting the gas lines.
Ken Allison and his family were at home Sunday night when those powerful storms blew through. They saw a flash and heard a loud bang, but didn't realize their home had been struck until a few minutes later when they started smelling smoke.
It turned out the gas line in the basement had burst, creating a fireball that then spread through the lines in the walls of the home.
Fortunately, the family made it out and watched from across the street as firefighters tried to save their home.
"You start seeing them coming with axes and picks and slamming your front windows out and your basement windows out and then you see thick black smoke coming out of your house then you definitely know this is worse than what we thought," said Ken Allison.
The Allisons will be allowed back in their home Monday to try to salvage what they can. The front room will have to be rebuilt, but the home should be livable again soon.
