BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - A photo appearing to show a dog that was the victim of abuse on a local Craigslist post turned out to be a hoax, the Belleville Police Department said Tuesday.

According to Detective Mark Heffernan, a police spokesman, the department was contacted late Monday afternoon about a potential animal cruelty case. The caller said an individual posted a picture of a dog with the title "Keeping the peace (Belleville)" and it also stated, "5:30 in the morning is not time to hear your dog barking. A good dog is a quiet dog."

The next day, Belleville police detectives discovered a news article from Australia dating back to December 2011 featuring the same photo used in the Craigslist advertisement.

The Craigslist post has been removed from the website.

The identity of the person who made the post on Craigslist remains unknown.

Belleville police take all reports of animal cruelty or abuse seriously and investigate them with haste, Heffernan said.
