ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Something unique is happening Thursday morning on the Mississippi River - a giant electromagnet is passing through St. Louis.

It's called the Muon G-2, and it allows scientists to look into the subatomic world and search for undiscovered particles.

The giant electromagnet is being shipped from the Brookhaven National Labratory in New York to the Fermi Lab in Chicago.

Right now, it's headed up the Mississippi River by barge at just 7 miles per hour.

It will spend most of the day Thursday traveling up the river past St. Louis.

You can track the progress of the Muon G-2 here.
