ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - Charges have been filed against a 69-year-old woman accused of killing her husband.
Mary A. Mullenix is charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and tampering with physical evidence.
Mullenix's husband, 76-year-old Ivan L. Mullenix Sr. was stabbed to death early Thursday morning. A family member called Town & Country Police, who called in the St. Louis County Police Department to assist in the homicide investigation.
Mary Mullenix was taken into custody at the scene.
She is held on a $500,000 bond.
Michael C. Mullenix, Douglas J. Mullenix, and Gregory S. Mullenix released the following statement Thursday afternoon: "At this point, we have no comment on the personal tragedy resulting in the death of our father, Ivan L. Mullenix, Sr. We are deeply saddened and would appreciate the news media respecting our privacy at this time."
Ivan Mullenix, Sr. started Mullenix Companies back in 1964 when he was married to his first wife. Together they had three boys, but in 1971 they divorced and Ivan married Mary.
Ivan and Mary Mullenix then had four kids together over the years.
A family source says Ivan stayed in real estate business until recently, when his first three sons Michael, Douglas and Gregory took over the family business focusing more on hotel development, but there was a hiccup along the way.
When Mullenix Companies was dissolving and becoming the new Equis Hospitality Management, the brothers ended up suing their father.
That lawsuit though dissolved amicably in early 2012 according to their attorney.
Equis Hospitality Management has 6 properties in the St. Louis area and one in the state of Virginia.
Neighbors were shocked to learn the news.
"You are surprised anytime something like that happens especially this close to your house, but as close as we live, I can't say that I know them well," said neighbor Tim Clark.
