PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY/NBC) - Police in Portsmouth, Va. have charged one of their own with animal cruelty after a former police horse died from what a veterinarian said was starvation.
Officer Brian Davis, 34, and his wife, Jennifer Davis, 33, have both been charged with cruelty to animals and inadequate care of animals. All the charges are misdemeanors.
Davis was assigned to the K-9 Unit at the Portsmouth Police Department. He is now in an administrative assignment.
The charges stem from a former Portsmouth Police horse's death. The horse, named "Amy" was a 14-year veteran of Portsmouth Police's mounted patrol before her retirement in 2009, when the Davis family adopted her and took her to their Suffolk home.
