JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - A 12-year-old High Ride girl hit by a car on her bike was airlifted to St. Louis Children's Hospital in critical condition and neighbors say it was bound to happen.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of West Rock Creek Road near Romaine Creek Road. Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer says this is one of their problem areas and they are constantly watching it.

A 72-year-old woman was coming around a corner and struck Isabella Marco while the girl was riding her bike.

"She didn't have anywhere to go, she tried to swerve, she didn't have anywhere to go," says neighbor Kelly Steffens, who lives right at this corner where the accident happened, but didn't witness it.

She arrived home right after the accident and tells us something like this was bound to happen.

"People speed and they drive so fast around these corners," she says. "Just the amount of volume it you sit out here for five minutes you will see 50 cars go by."

As a mom, she wants to protect her kids and that includes her 14-year-old son, Dakota.

"Very reluctant to have my own child ride his bike in the driveway," she says.

Dakota has cerebral palsy and recently got this new bike to help recover from a surgery, but knows why he's not allowed in the driveway.

"They drive too fast," says Dakota Steffens.

Kelly says some neighbors try to take matters into their own hands.

"You will hear him, slow down you know yelling at people to slow down," she says.

Kelly says it sounds like the driver in Wednesday's accident was not speeding, but was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Something for these residents that seemed inevitable.

"You never know when somebody will take the wrong turn," says Dakota.

The family had to put in tall bushes to act as a cushion or barrier after a car did come crashing into their home.

The speed limit on West Rock Creek Road is 30 miles per hour and a suggested 20 mph around the corners.
