WELLSTON, Mo. (KSDK) - A local police chief is forced to set inmates free because he doesn't have the money to feed them.

Wellston Police Chief Thomas Walker claims Mayor Linda Whitfield will not give him the $100 per month that he needs to feed the inmates. And officers have been digging into their own pockets for bread and cold cuts. Wellston officers make under $12 an hour; about half of what officers in nearby cities make.

The Wellston Police Department released five inmates Wednesday that were being held on misdemeanor charges.

If we get one for a felony or a serious type of assault, again, either myself or the supervisors will have to dig down in their pockets and get enough food to hold them until we can get the report completed and make a warrant application at St. Louis County," Walker said.

In the meantime, NewsChannel 5 reached out to Mayor Linda Whitfield for comment, but she did not return those calls.
