ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The search continues for a killer who gunned down a man who had pulled over in his car in south St. Louis.
The victim, John Paulsen, held a high level position at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel: director of catering at the Chase. His dad says he was on his way home early Sunday morning after a Saturday night wedding when he was killed.
Tammy Jascur sees the signs that the neighborhood she's lived in and loved for 15 years is taking a turn for the worse.
"It's just unbelievable how much graffiti is, you know, through the alleys and throughout the dumpsters," she said.
That turn may have reached its worst on Neosho Street at around three Sunday morning.
Police found 48-year-old John Paulsen sitting in his car unconscious and shot in the arm and chest. He died at a hospital.
Paulsen's father says he believes his son was on his way home from working a wedding at the Chase and had pulled over to put the top up on his convertible, when an unknown man approached and shot him.
"I can't believe that this man, you know, five houses down from where I live, you know, the poor guy pulls over and got shot. I'm in shock that this has happened," said Jascur.
While police aren't talking about motive, Paulsen's father, who lives in the town of Goodland, Kansas where John grew up, believes it was random, senseless violence aimed at a man who loved to sing, play instruments and fought and beat cancer.
"In March of this year, he had just got through his five years that he was in remission, so he was free," said James Paulsen.
John Paulsen was just a couple of miles from his house. Police say at this point it doesn't look like anything was stolen.
