EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KSDK) - A 24-year-old East St. Louis man is being questioned Thursday for allegedly beating a 5-month-old girl.

According to East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore, police were called to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital late Wednesday afternoon about a possible case of child abuse. Police met with a social worker at the hospital, who told them the child had been severely beaten.

The little girl suffered a skull fracture and blunt trauma to her left eye, brain and ribs, Floore said.

The child's mother said the baby had been staying with a family relative on McCasland Avenue. Police made contact with that individual and have been questioning him ever since.

"This event is believed to happen sporadically over the past month," says Chief Floore. "We don't know if the mom knew about all of this or not, she says she knew a little about it."

The police department's Juvenille Death Investigation team is now involved with the investigation.
