ST.LOUIS (KSDK) - Officials recovered the body of a missing fisherman in the Mississippi River Saturday afternoon.
Rescue teams have been searching for Dennis McMenamy, 46, since early Friday morning after a tow boat and fishing vessel collided along the Mississippi River.
Authorities were notified about the accident at 3:05 a.m. Friday. It happened north of the Chain of Rocks Bridge. They were told that a towboat had an 18-foot fishing boat caught in a small opening in between its two lead barges.
The fishing boat was not heavily damaged and was still floating on top of the river. Authorities say there was evidence inside the fishing boat that it had been recently occupied.
The Illinois Conservation Police (DNR), the Missouri water patrol and coast guard are handling the investigation from here on out. The coast guard is handling the commercial side of the investigation, while the conservation police is taking care of the recreational investigation.
The towboat was pushing a total of 15 barges. No injuries were reporting on the towboat.
The investigation is being turned over to Illinois State Police.
