ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Dozens of suspected drug dealers are off the streets after a massive drug raid in metro east.
It was part of a three month long undercover operation called "Wild Wild East." Out of the 58 charged in wake of the sting, 33 are behind bars and 25 are on the run.
Officials involved with the operation said drug deals in the metro east often happen in broad daylight, just feet from parks, churches and schools.
Operation "Wild Wild East" was funded by federal grant money. During a three-month period, undercover agents - most of them affiliated with Illinois State Police - busted thousands of drug deals.
"This will no doubt change the equation in East St. Louis for the drug activity that has been going on in that community for a long, long time," said St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly.
"We have additional money left to use this year and next year on other similar operations and I can guarantee you we will do that," said US Attorney Steve Wigginton.
