St. Charles County, MO (KSDK)  - A man is dead after a bizarre incident on the Mississippi River. It happened up river from Portage Des Sioux in St. Charles County near a boat ramp area known as Hideaway Harbor.

The Missouri Water Patrol says it was an accident that brought them to the Mississippi around 4 p.m. Sunday.

They say a man was operating a speed boat of some kind on the river and decided to pull up onto a sand bar.

The problem, authorities say, is that 60 year old Michael P. Dallwitz dove into less than two feet of water. They say his injuries from that dive are what killed him.

"It's really hard to understand this because if you pull the boat into that sand bar you've got to know that it can't be that deep of water," says Sgt. Al Nothum with the Missouri Highway Patrol of which the Water Patrol is a division. "We'll interview all of the people on the boat. We know that's what took place out there and how he died from diving into shallow water," said Nothum.

Toxicology test will be a part of the investigation, but the Patrol says it is too soon to say if alcohol played any role in this accident.
