Florissant, MO (KSDK) - Friends and family are mourning the sudden loss of a prominent Florissant businessman. Jim Mattingly died suddenly Sunday morning of an apparent heart attack.

He opened Mattingly's back in the seventies, which eventually expanded to a second location in St. Charles.

We all have that place, that familiar spot that feels like home away from home. For some that's Mattingly's.

Started in 1971 by the late Jim Mattingly.

"He was probably one of the most kind hearted generous, people I've ever met in my life, sorry," says Callie Mcdonough, stepdaughter of Jim's.

She says Jim was a cornerstone for the family, the one outside the restaurant and inside.

"He made you want to be a better person, all around, every employee here, he would always help them out if they needed, all they have to do is ask and he does it for them," says Jim's son, Kyle.

He says it was all about family for his dad, from his employees and customers to his children and step children.

"I am his stepdaughter, but he has never made me feel the way that some step parents would make you feel, its like I was one of his own," says Mcdonough.

Jim's passing was a shock to everyone that knew him, including Hazelwood Mayor Matthew Robinson.

"He was always a supporter of any function that needed to be taken care of, or to help anybody out in any way," says Mayor Robinson.

The mayor says Jim was a good friend to him and to the business community and would often giving advice to other up and coming business owners.

As for Mattingly's, the family says they will keep the family name and the community tradition alive, keeping the restaurants open.

"We've lost an icon in north county here today that's no doubt about that," says the mayor. "Everybody knows Jim."

The public visitation will be held at Hutchens on Graham road Wednesday from 1-9.

A funeral service at North County Community Church Thursday at 10 am.

The family asks that donations be made to the Major Case Squad, Jim's favorite charity.
