ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Missouri Department of Transportation crews spent the weekend resurfacing a few lanes in each direction on the Poplar Street bridge this weekend.
The thick steel plates on the bridge used to be covered by a thin layer of asphalt for the driving surface. Over the years, that has crumbled, so they're trying a new approach to make that asphalt stick better to the deck.
The substance is a sticky, oily polymer that engineers helped create. You can really tell the difference when you look at the new lanes compared to the still unrepaired lanes.
Right now there's no guarantee this new substance will work better, a MoDOT spokesperson told NewsChannel 5's Grant Bissell Monday morning only time will tell.
This is just a temporary fix until more permanent work is done on the bridge over the next few years.
The remaining two lanes in each direction are set to be resurfaced next weekend.
