WINFIELD, Mo. (KSDK) - One person was seriously injured Wednesday night after trying to cross railroad tracks in a pickup truck.

The passenger side of the 1994 Dodge Ram driven by 30-year-old Gary D. Nelsen of Elsberry, was struck by the train around 6:15 p.m. on Highway 79 at Main Street in Winfield, Mo.

An official with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says the crossing does not have a gate, but the warning lights at the crossing were on. It is unknown if Nelsen tried to beat the train or if he didn't realize it was coming.

The BNSF train was heading south when it hit the truck.

Nelsen was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur.
