O'FALLON, Ill. (AP) - O'Fallon Mayor Gary Graham has appointed an acting police chief to replace longtime Police Chief John Betten, who died after a four-year cancer fight.
Graham said Tuesday he has confidence in Captain Jeff Wild's ability to serve as public safety director. The mayor noted Wild is the department's longest-tenured captain and regularly filled in for Betten when he was out of town.
Betten's wife, Anne, told the Belleville News-Democrat her husband beat the odds, surviving for four years after an initial cancer diagnosis gave him just four to six months to live.
Graham told the News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/1bEaigU) city officials will not rush with the selection process and "make sure we get the best public safety director for our community."
O'Fallon, a city of 28,300, is located east of St. Louis.
