ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A 17-year-old student was shot on his way to Vashon High School Wednesday morning, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said.
The shooting took place just before 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Sheridan and Webster avenues, near the high school.
Investigators said the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather stemmed from an ongoing conflict between two groups of students (some current, some former).
The two groups clashed at the aforementioned intersection and the 17-year-old victim was shot in the back after turning around.
The school did not go into lockdown and police said people at the school were not in any danger. Patrols have remained at the Vashon High School as a precautionary measure.
The victim was in surgery as of 11 a.m., according to a tweet from St. Louis Metropolitan Police. He is currently listed as stable.
The shooter remains on the loose. A police spokesperson said authorities are confident they're closing on a number of suspects.
