EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KSDK) - Police are investigating the death of a newborn who was allegedly thrown out of a second floor window on Friday.
East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore says, around 5 p.m. on Friday, a 23-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy at her home in the 500 block of North 23rd street.
Chief Floore says the woman, whose name was not released, then wrapped the baby in a white sheet and tossed the newborn out of a second floor window.
The baby was found dead shortly after 10:00 p.m. in some grass next to the home.
Floore said police do not know why the mother threw her baby out of the window.
The woman was taken to a hospital and was placed on a police hold.
Sunday, the St. Clair County Coroner's Office told us it had completed the preliminary autopsy. But more tests will be needed before it releases and official cause of death. Authorities say the baby was old enough that he probably would have survived if born in safe conditions.
No charges have been applied for, but the St. Clair County Child Death Investigation team is investigating.
