BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - A convicted murderer in the Metro East is getting a new trial because the judge in his trial is facing heroin and drug charges and the courthouse scandal could prompt more re-trials.

Defense attorneys are starting to make the case that their clients did not get fair trials in St. Clair County because they were never told their judge was under investigation.

Former judge Michael Cook, 43, is facing drug and gun charges that came after a fellow judge overdosed and died in Cook's hunting cabin.

Wednesday, a judge ordered a new trial for 29-year-old William Cosby of East St. Louis. He was convicted of murder in Cook's courtroom.

Prosecutors say another convicted murderer will ask for a re-trial later this month.

State's Attorney Brendan Kelly says his office continues to review cases from Cook's court room.
