DE SOTO, Mo. (KSDK) - A massive fire destroyed a family's home in Jefferson County Friday afternoon.
It's a devastating loss for the family, especially because it's the second time this has happened.
The fire started in the 4500 block of Valley View Drive in De Soto. We're told the family moved into this house after their previous home burned down a few years ago.
Firefighters got the call a little after 3:30 p.m. When units got there, flames were shooting out of the attic. A neighbor tried to put the fire out with a fire hose, but that didn't work.
Some of the family's belongings were salvaged, including an American flag. The owner of the home is a veteran. He was not home at the time, but his step-daughter was.
"There was a lady and her four year old daughter home," said De Soto Rural Fire District Assistant Chief Thomas Fitzgerald. "The four year old daughter woke the lady up when she heard the smoke alarm. They were able to get out. They had to run across the street to call 911."
A firefighter was injured when part of the ceiling collapsed onto the first crew that got inside the house. We're told he was taken to a local hospital with minor burns and is expected to be ok.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
