WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPBF/CNN) - Police arrested three people for allegedly using a luxury yacht to transport cocaine from the Bahamas to the United States.
Federal agents in West Palm Beach saw three people unloading duffel bags from a yacht at the palm harbor marina.
Authorities say 34-year-old Jonathan Costenbader admitted that he hadn't cleared customs and admitted the bags contained cocaine. Agents found 11 duffel bags containing more than 280 one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. Other boaters at the marina were surprised someone tried to smuggle the drugs on a yacht.
"As a professional in the industry, I had never even heard of such a thing. I think it's incredibly moronic, really. Yeah, it's definitely a first. It's surprising to me," said Captain Jon McIntyre.
Agents say the yacht was spotted about 30 miles offshore by a customs and border patrol plane. Homeland Security tracked it to the marina.
