(KSDK) -- A woman and her unborn child are killed while traveling to their own baby shower. Erin Hughes, 23, was starting a new life with her husband and their expected child. She was 8 months pregnant. She and her husband John were married on Thursday. They lived in Kansas City but were coming to St. Louis for their baby shower when they got into an accident.
Bria Dorsey was co-hosting the party. Bria said, "We were like 'she's late to her own baby shower that's just like her' and I thought I hope they are not hurrying because it's raining outside."
Police say another accident on I-70 in Wentzville on Saturday indirectly caused the accident involving the young couple. The accident in Wentzville caused traffic to back up all the way to Foristell, about 8 miles away. That is where John and Erin got into their accident. Police say the couple didn't see the vehicle in front of them slow down. They hit that vehicle, causing the couple’s car to overturn.
Erin died in the hospital after doctors delivered the baby by through ceasarian section. The baby did not survive. Bria said, "She had a tear in her eye when I saw her. I said, she knew her baby was gone. She couldn't live without her baby. Her heart was broken.”
Bria says John spent an hour with his wife and child before he had to be taken to surgery. Bria said, "He couldn't stop holding her hand and holding his baby.”
Bria and Erin were best friends since high school. Erin had dreams of becoming a singer. Bria said, "I always told her I can't wait till she makes it big so I could be her groupie. She had the most beautiful voice. God must have wanted her to sing up there with the angels.”
Erin Hughes, whose maiden name were Erin Hines, attended Bayless and Affton high schools in St. Louis before moving to Kansas City. Her husband John, who is recovering in the hospital, is from the East Coast.
