EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KSDK) – The 46-year-old woman tasked with looking after the 3-year-old girl who went missing Monday afternoon has been taken into custody. Police say she could be officially charged on Wednesday.
The child was reunited with her mother early Tuesday morning outside of a Foot Locker store.
The mother told police she left her daughter with a babysitter Monday morning, and when she returned, the child wasn't there. Before she notified police, the mother contacted numerous family members and friends to try and find her.
Police say they later determined that the babysitter "became impaired" Monday afternoon and "lost the child," according to a news release. Sometime during the night, the child was left in the care of another individual, who contacted police after seeing news reports that the girl was missing.
A second person interviewed by authorities during the investigation was also arrested on an unrelated warrant.
