Cardinals senior staff helps build Joplin homes

St. Louis (KSDK) -- St. Louis Cardinals senior officials will help build five homes in Joplin along side the families who will get to move into the homes later this year.

Team President Bill DeWitt, General Manager John Mozeliak Manager Mike Matheny are among the group that will travel to Joplin Monday to help as part of the Governor's Joplin Challenge.

Professional builders, Habitat for Humanity volunteers, Missouri state officials, staff and volunteers of the Springfield Cardinals are also helping with the project.

The state of Missouri is providing $3.6 million to Habitat to build 35 homes for families who lost their homes in last year's tornado. Governor Jay Nixon challenged Missouri's seven most prominent sports organizations (Blues, Cardinals, Chiefs, NASCAR, Rams, Royals, Tigers) to adopt a neighborhood of five homes in the destruction zone.
