Colorado police save hostage in 18-hour standoff

ARVADA, Colo. — Police rescued a teen held hostage in a home here and fatally shot his captor, authorities said Tuesday.

At about 11:15 a.m. MT, a police SWAT team shot the suspect through the front door and entered the house to bring out the 13-year-old, who was uninjured but had been held overnight.

The standoff started at about 5:30 p.m. Monday after a domestic dispute, police say. When officers arrived to mediate that dispute, the man involved fled to another home on the same block in this northwest Denver suburb of more than 100,000.

The suspect barged into that home and took the teen hostage. The teen's mother and brother were able to escape.
