Shootout in Lindenwood Park leaves one man dead
Lindenwood Park, MO (KSDK) - The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has taken one man into custody in connection with a wild shoot out in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood of South St. Louis.
Police say a 74-year-old male got into an altercation with a 50-year-old male at a business on the 3100 block of Ivanhoe on Friday evening.
The 74-year-old shot the 50-year-old and attempted to leave the scene. As the 74-year-old male drove away he was shot by a third person who police are not yet identifying.
Both the 74-year-old male and the 50-year-old male were taken to the hospital where the elder of the two died. The 50-year-old man was most recently listed in critical condition.
A positive identification has not been made on the 74-year-old man yet so his name is not being released.
The Friday shootings happened less than a block from a busy Catholic church, where families were gathering for a Friday night fish-fry.
It's a scene people here say they never expected, but one that several saw.
"Seen a guy standing right on the sidewalk shooting like it was the wild west," said witness Mike Polito.
Police say the two men knew each other and may have previously worked together.
Dan Schmitt was on the job making a delivery nearby when he heard the shooting.
"I was actually going by as the shooting was happening within feet of it," Schmitt said. "Just freaked me out really. And as soon as I got my composure I called 9-1-1."
And dozens more were at a church less than a block away, just arriving for a fish fry.
"We were just getting ready to enter, going up to the fish fry, and I heard the guns going off," said Polito. "My kids play around here and I've got friends that walk around here. Anything could have happened."
