OSHAWA, Ontario (CNN/CBC News) - Authorities in Oshawa, Ontario are investigating an unusual robbery attempt.

The suspect allegedly stole a gray hearse right out of the garage of a funeral home early Wednesday morning.

Police say he literally crashed through the facility's garage door to get the vehicle out.

The driver dodged several police cars and crossed a three-lane highway, before jumping a sidewalk and eventually smashing into a concrete bench.

Police shot the suspected thief as he tried to make a getaway. He survived and was taken to a hospital.
