Attempted car theft at Kirkwood gas station ends in gunfire

This comes after news of three carjackings in St. Charles County over the weekend.

KIRKWOOD, MO. - Police are investigating after an attempted car theft at a Kirkwood, Missouri, gas station ended in an exchange of gunfire.

The incident happened at the QuikTrip on the 9900 block of Big Bend Boulevard near Interstate 44 late Friday night.

Kirkwood police have not made much information public yet, but they did say the victim was armed and exchanged gunfire with the suspect. No one was hurt, and the suspect wasn't able to get away with the car.

Police said they found the suspect's car in South St. Louis County, but he is not in custody. Police said he was using a pink and dark-colored semi-automatic hand gun.

Three other car thefts have happened at QuikTrip locations in the St. Louis area in the past month. While police have not connected this incident with those, it does match up with those because all the incidents happened near interstates, which investigators say could provide a faster escape route.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
